Hello, my name is Jim Thiewes! MY VITALS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Occupation:Banking Home town:Minneapolis Location: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MORE ABOUT ME... I joined this wiki because: To share my modeling knowledge and of course to gain some much needed modeling exposure! The best word to describe me is: Not sure. Interests: Military figure modeling. Favorite movies: Band of Brothers Favorite TV shows: Hogan's Hero's My hero(es): Paul Stanley (KISS), Bill Horan, and Doug Cohen. Three truly inspirational people. My superpower is: Not sure. If I could live anywhere, it would be: Greece My dream job(s): Lead singer of KISS! Yes, with the Makeup, and platform shoes. What else you should know about me: I live in Minneapolis with my lovely wife Carla and two boys, David and John. I love teaching and wrestling with my kids, figure modeling, fishing, yard work, camp fires, playing catch, watching Minnesota pro sports, Fondu parties, all Holiday festivities and a whole lot more. I got into modeling back in the 80's as a kid painting toy soldiers, of course I had no idea what I was doing, painting with gloss Testers paints. After I left home in 1992 I left modeling for 8 years. I got back into modeling in April 2000, the same time I got sober after a number of years drinking, I turned the bottle in for the paintbrush. I was basically a model kit collector before I stopped drinking, admiring the box art and what beautifully done figures Ron Volstad sketched and painted. I must have collected 40 or 50 kits at that time. I remember opening the kits and saying "man that looks like a lot of work"! Can imagine someone thats buzzed three or four nights out of the week trying to spend any quality time figure modeling? Let me just say that once I decided I had enough of the excess I realized that this hobby meant so much more to my sobriety when I first got sober and still does. This created a some what therapeutic exercise for my brain, revitalizing my senses so to speak, and realizing what I could actually create with my own hands. I never thought it to be possible from where I came from before. Realizing my potential with this hobby, I pushed harder to learn more, and eventually found MMFS after visiting National hobby later in 2000. The club had a display case with some of their finished pieces. It was when I joined the club my skills really improved. My first few years in the club I worked close with Merrill Anderson, which he is a very skilled modeler. I also learned a lot from another very skilled modeler, Mike Bedard, giving tips and tricks of the trade and through some of his at times tough to swallow critiques. Let me say something about critiques, If I did'nt get the honest feed back on my work, how would I improve? I wouldn't. I would continue to make the same mistakes over and over and over again. This hobby is all about critiques. I always try to take the feedback with an open mind and learn from it, and you know what? It works every time. Other members of MMFS over the years like Chris Barrett, and Scott Primeau taught me a lot too. Of course I can't forget the rest of the members of MMFS, we've all learned a lot from each other over the years. Thanks guys! If some of you reading this don't belong to a club, try to find one, it will make a huge difference, it did for me. Thanks for reading, and happy modeling! If you have any questions, send me an email. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAY HELLO!
